How to control your roller shutters remotely? The Complete Guide

Do you dream of controlling your roller shutters from your sofa? To close them from the office so as not to suffer the heat when you return? Everything you need to know to control your roller shutters.

The advantages of remote control of your roller shutters

1. Unparalleled comfort in everyday life

Imagine never having to walk around the house in the evening to close all your shutters again. Remote control allows you to operate all your shutters in a single gesture from your smartphone, whether you are in bed, at work or on the other side of the world. It's the ultimate comfort for everyone in the family.

2. Enhanced security for your home

Roller shutters provide protection for your windows, making them less vulnerable in the event of a break-in attempt. Forgot to close them when you left home? By controlling your shutters remotely, you can close them with a simple click at any time, from anywhere. Better still, the home automation box, which is essential for smartphone control, allows you to automatically simulate your presence. By programming the random opening and closing of your shutters at regular times, you give the impression that the house is inhabited ; A great way to deter intrusions. 3. Thermal protection and energy savings

In summer, the sun's rays can quickly increase the indoor temperature. By closing your shutters remotely during the hottest hours of the day, you keep your home cool without having to turn on the air conditioning. In winter, shutters that are lowered at night form an additional insulating layer, reducing heat loss and the need for heating. This simple gesture can allow you to make considerable energy savings. Several solutions allow you to automate this process: our TaHoma® switch home automation box or the Amy® sun protect io control point. Your insulating roller shutter adapts itself according to the sun!

5. An entry point to smart scenarios

Remote control is more than just a button. With a home automation system, you can create custom scenarios. For example, the "Departure" scenario which, with a single click, closes all the shutters, turns off the lights and activates the alarm. Or the "Movie Night" scenario that lowers the shutters, dims the lights and turns on your TV. It's the house that adapts to you, not the other way around.

More than just a gadget, remote control of roller shutters offers you a multitude of concrete benefits, those of connectivity. Because when we talk about remote control, we are mainly talking about smartphone control from anywhere, which leads to connected roller shutters.

Connectionless control is also possible by remote control, but with a limited range to the enclosure of the house and the sole benefit of opening and closing your shutters without moving.

The prerequisites for controlling your shutters remotely, from anywhere

Before you get started, this guide gives you the essential information on the technologies to adopt.

1. Roller shutters with radio motors

At Somfy, we offer roller shutter motors using RTS and io-homecontrol® radio technologies. These motors incorporate a radio receiver that allows them to receive wireless signals.

  • RTS (Radio Technology Somfy): a unidirectional technology. The command sends a signal to the pane, but the pane does not return any information. You open or close your panes, but you don't know if the command has been executed.
  • io-homecontrol® technology : a bidirectional technology. The shutter sends a confirmation to the home automation box that sent it the signal, once the order has been executed. This allows you to know the exact position of your shutters at any time directly from your home automation app. This is great for peace of mind, as a simple glance at your smartphone confirms that everything is securely closed.

How to make your wired roller shutters remotely controllable?

Are your current roller shutters already motorised but work with a wall control (wired motor)?  Don't panic! You don't need to change them. Several solutions exist to allow you to control them remotely with your existing engines:

The micro-radio module for roller shutters

It is a small box that plugs into the back of the wall control point of your existing shutter and transforms it into an RTS or io-homecontrol radio roller shutter®. Our RTS connected micro-module can be installed by you >>Installation tutorial, the io-homecontrol® micro-module requires the intervention of a professional.

The radio receiver switch

Another solution that you can install yourself, the Smoove Uno io switch replaces your existing wall switch. It adds a radio function and allows you to control your wired shutter motor remotely. >> Installation tutorial

2. A home automation box

Once your shutters are equipped with a radio motor, you still have to connect them using a home automation box: TaHoma® switch or a connectivity kit.

This is the central element for remote control via smartphone. The home automation box is a hub that connects to your Wi-Fi network and your ecosystem of connected products and equipment. It allows you to centralize the control of your entire connected home (shutters, blinds, lighting, alarm, etc.) on a single interface : the TaHoma® mobile application.
